What is the format of the RHIT exam and how do I pass it?

The RHIT exam has 150 multiple-choice questions (130 scored, 20 pretest) completed in 3.5 hours at a Pearson VUE test center. AHIMA uses a scaled passing score; candidates who answered at least 80% of questions correctly on practice sets typically pass comfortably. The first-time pass rate is approximately 72–75%. Common weak areas are ICD-10-CM coding guidelines (Chapter-specific rules, sequencing), revenue cycle and DRG assignment, and data analytics terminology. Preparing with practice question sets that include detailed coding rationales is particularly effective for the coding-heavy sections. AHIMA recommends candidates have completed their program coursework before sitting for the exam.
