AHIMA uses a scaled passing score; candidates who answered at least 80% of questions correctly on practice sets typically pass comfortably. The first-time pass rate is approximately 72–75%. Common weak areas are ICD-10-CM coding guidelines (Chapter-specific rules, sequencing), revenue cycle and DRG assignment, and data analytics terminology. Preparing with practice question sets that include detailed coding rationales is particularly effective for the coding-heavy sections. AHIMA recommends candidates have completed their program coursework before sitting for the exam.
