Shading & Production Impacts (Topic 2) in Module 4 – Solar-PV-NABCEP-Associate (BG)

Shading & Production Impacts

Shading is one of the most important site factors in PV design. Even small shaded areas can reduce output, especially for series-connected strings.

What to remember

  • Shade reduces irradiance, which reduces current.
  • In a series string, reduced current in one module can reduce output of the whole string.
  • Bypass diodes and module-level electronics can reduce (but not eliminate) shading impacts.

Practical design thinking

  • Avoid predictable shade (chimneys, dormers, parapets, trees).
  • Consider seasonal changes: winter sun is lower and can create longer shadows.
